Vernacular makes visual media that translates complex information into a common visual language.

I had the exciting opportunity to work with the royal college of surgeons during the very beginning stages of launching an online training course that would supplement hands on training with surgical staff. The surgical college wanted to start boosting its ability to offer remote access training across the UK and web apps were a great starting point for them.

Roche was looking to update an existing eBook on breast cancer management. As a leading research company in breast cancer treatments it was important from them to continue to also develop patient materials. Using this softer illustration style I used vector based characters to create the illustrations. The characters vary in ethnicity and age. The colour palette was used throughout the website and the my cancer compass website.

There is a lot of concern that the increased cancer rates around the Athabasca oil sands in Alberta (where I grew up) are a result of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). Recent scholarship details increasing levels of PAHs in the Athabasca River and its tributaries. The link between PAH and cancers is widely established. This brief animation presents these issues to the public, depicting the complex events underlying the pathophysiology specific to the types of cancers associated with increased PAHs.

Heart disease affects approximately 2.4 million Canadian adults, and is the second leading cause of death in Canada.

Completed as part of an internship at the Smithsonian, these beetles further developed my skills in digital illustration as well as adaptability to a specific style. These will be published in a text with many other beetles done using the same techniques.
